  • English: In the 17th and 18th c. a unified type of organ became established in France, for which increasingly fixed musical sonorities and textures were developed (these remained unaltered for a century). Although much is known about registration practice, data on tempo, articulation, and textures have been largely lacking. Eleven types of texture are described, each with its associated indications for tempo, articulation, and registration (plein jeu, plain chant, fond d'orgue, duo, trio a deux dessus, basse de cromorne, basse et dessus de trompette, voix humaine, various types of récits, concert de flûtes, and dialogue sur les grands jeux).
