  • In romanischer Zeit gegründet. Unter Würzburgischer Herrschaft Stadtbefestigung Gotisch- sowie unter Fürstbischof Julius Echter im frühen 17 Jh verstärkt. Weite Teile der Stadtmauer mit innen angestellten Rundtürmen zur Verstärkung erhalten, ebenso die integrierte Burg Brattenstein, sowie einige der Stadttore. Stadtbild der Renaissance mit Georgskapelle (Jahr 1588) sowie Echter-Spital (1614) und Barock Rathaus 1750). Die Stadtkirche St. Kilian ist Romanischen Ursprungs, hat eine frühgotische Chorapside, wurde gotisch überarbeitet und erweitert und birgt eine gute Ausstattung sowie Grabsteine und Epitaphien. Founded in Romanesque time, the town soon was strongly fortified and constantly strengthened, as is was usual in these times o serve as a warhead at all. It was Prince Bishop Julius Echter of Würzburg, who paid special attention although to this town in the late 16th-early 17th century, build the chapel St. Georg (1588), the “Echter Hospital” (1614) and reinforced the defense at all. Of the latter, good parts of the town wall are remaining, strengthened with rounded towers which are added “inside” to- but not “into” the town wall; furthermore, two of the former four town gates are present. Finally also Baroque architecture can the seen , for example in the case of the new town hall from 1750. The church St. Kilian is a gem; founded in Romanesque time, added with a choir-apse of early Gothic stile and finally overworks in late Gothic Manner. A fine interior and many grave stones and epitaphs complete the list.
